Pool Pump: Operations & MaintenanceUpdated an hour ago

Once your FibroPool pool pump is installed, it only takes a little bit of maintenance to keep it running smoothly. The maintenance is easy and pays off big, with clean water, lower energy bills, and longer life for your whole system. Regular care prevents 80% of issues like clogs or noise. This guide covers daily operation, routine maintenance, and seasonal tips for both ABG (above-ground) and FP (in-ground) series. Why bother? A well-maintained pump circulates water better, mixes chemicals/heats evenly, and saves power (keeping your energy bills lower).

Quick Safety Note: Always power off at breaker before touching internals. If something feels off (loud noise, leaks), stop and check, when needed contact support or call a pro for repairs to protect warranty.

Priming Your Pump (Important Startup Step)

Priming means filling the pump with water to get rid of air—without it, the pump runs dry and can overheat or fail to move water. Do this after install, winter, or if flow stops.

  • Step-by-Step:

    • Power off pump.

    • Open lid, fill strainer basket full with water (from hose or bucket).

    • Close lid tight (hand-tight + 1/4 turn).

    • Power on—should start flowing in 30-60 sec.

    • If not: Repeat fill, check for air leaks in pipes.

  • Model NotesABG/FP both self-priming, but FP higher HP pulls water faster—still fill basket for quick start.

Daily Operation

Your pump's job is to run enough hours for full turnover (clean all water 1-2 times/day).

  • Run Time: 6-8 hours in season (longer in hot weather). Use a timer for auto on/off—saves forgetting.

    • Model Notes: ABG single-speed: Run full time or timer; FP (some with digital): Set schedules for efficiency.

  • Start Up: Power on—listen for quiet hum, check flow from returns.

    • Why? Ensures no air locks or clogs from the start.

  • Monitor: Glance at basket/pressure gauge weekly, clear any debris if the flow slows.

Routine Maintenance (Weekly/Monthly)

Do these to keep the pump happy, only takes 10-15 min.

  1. Clean Strainer Basket: Power off, open lid, remove/rinse basket.

    • Why? Catches leaves and a full basket reduces flow, which strains the motor.

    • Model Notes: ABG twist-lock lid super easy; FP larger basket for bigger pools.

  1. Check for Leaks/Air: Look at connections, tighten if dripping. Bleed air if noisy.

    • Why? Leaks waste water; air causes cavitation (bad for impeller).

  2. Backwash Filter: If sand/cartridge, follow filter guide (every 1-4 weeks).

    • Why? Clean filter = better pump performance.

  3. Lubricate O-RingsLight silicone on lid O-ring yearly.

    • Model Notes: FP higher HP—check more often in heavy use.

Seasonal Care

  • Summer Peak: Run longer, clean basket more (hot weather = more debris).

  • Winter Storage: In freezing areas, drain fully (open valves, remove plugs), store indoors if possible.

    • Why? Water freezes/expands, cracking parts.

    • Model Notes: ABG lighter and easier move; FP is heavier, so drain in place or team lift.

Troubleshooting Quick Fixes

  • Noisy PumpAir in system (re-prime); or debris (clean basket).

  • Low Flow: Clogged basket/filter (clean); or impeller jam (have a pro check).

  • Won't Start: Check power/GFCI (ABG); voltage/breaker (FP).

  • Persistent issues? Snap photos and contact support, we're here to help!

Add a timer and clean regularly, you'll love how effortless it feels. See our Installation Guide for  refresh on the setup process or Sizing guide if you're ready for an upgrade.
